Alright, so we begin our delectable donut journey in Franklin, TN at the Factory. This amazing building was built in 1929 and was the home of Dortch Stove Works, Magic Chef, and then later the Jamison Bedding Company. It has since been turned into a mixed-use building housing some great restaurants, shops, and a theater. If you’ve never been to the factory, do yourself a favor and check this place out!

So Chelsea and I chose Five Daughters Bakery to begin this donut review adventure for a couple of reasons. One – they have incredible donuts, two – we lived in Franklin awhile back and this place feels like home, and three – this was the first place I ever had a cronut (croissant donut).
If you’ve never had a cronut before, you deserve to be punched, because come on… this is 2019. We’re living in the future – a wondrous place where we have watches just like Dick Tracy, we can have anything delivered to our door within hours (thanks Amazon), we always have calculators with us on our phones (ha! I always knew my 7th grade math teacher was lying to me about that), and donuts have evolved into something glorious that kind of resemble a croissant with many flaky layers of sugary goodness.
I’ll be grading on the following criteria:
- TYPE – Yeast, Cronut, or Cake
- FILLING – None, custard, fruit, etc… you get the idea
- SWEETNESS – On a scale of 1 – 5 (1 being the least sweet, 5 being super sweet)
- COST – 1 being really cheap, 5 being overpriced
- TOPPING LEVEL – 1 having no toppings, 5 being overloaded with stuff
- OVERALL GRADE – From A – F, my overall take on how good this donut is and if it’s worth your time

Enough of the chit-chat, bring on the donuts!

The chocolate sea salt cronut has a great, outer chocolate glaze with sea salt sprinkling the exterior. There’s a really nice, but maybe too sweet, chocolate mousse filling inside of the crunchy, flaky exterior. Overall great donut, but a bit pricey.

This is a great donut. It’s pretty “simple” since there are no crazy toppings, and the vanilla bean frosting on the top of the donut is amazing. The cronut texture means there is a nice, flaky, somewhat crunchy, exterior with a soft, fluffy interior. The Purist needs to be added to your donut list!
I hope you enjoyed this first donut review! Don’t worry, there’ll be many more in the future, so stay tuned!
